Vertebrae: 39 - 40. Distinguished from all species of Hemibrycon, including its sympatric species and H. fasciatusby having the following characters: dark pigment of the peduncle spot restricted to just the ventral half of the caudal peduncle; anterior lateral-line scales outlined with melanophores; and scales of posterior margin of caudal peduncle with multiple undulations (Ref. 95113).
