Prefers to inhabit pools and areas along banks of swift, clear, cool, well-oxygenated highland streams. A midwater swimmer, never found at the surface and seldom on the bottom, over hard substrates composed of smooth rocks, gravel, or sand. Feeds on algae, aquatic plants and insect larvae.
