Etymology: Astyanax: The name of Astyanax, Hector´s son in the Greek mythology (Ref. 45335); microschemos: From the Greek mikroschemos, meaning low stature, in reference to the shallow body depth of the species.
Eponymy: Astyanax was the son of Hector in Greek mythology. See Homer’s Iliad for details. The reasoning for its use for a genus of characins is not explained. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics
Vertebrae: 35 - 36. A member of the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex that distinguishes from species outside this complex by having anal fin with 14-18 branched rays and body depth shallow (26.9-29.7% of SL). Differs from other species of the species complex by its shallow body depth (26.9-29.7% SL) and the smaller interorbital width (26.9-30.4% HL) (Ref. 57404).
The type locality is about 2 m wide brook with clear water, segments with rapids, riparian vegetation and a substrate of stones and rocks; associated with Characidium sp.,
Neoplecostomus sp. and Trichomycterus sp. (Ref. 57404).
