Africa: upper Ituri and tributaries (Ref. 86918, 87849) and Lindi and tributaries in the Ituri forest (Ref. 87849) in Democratic Republic of the Congo. Other reports (Ref. 3788, 27139, 47461) probably are misidentifications (see Ref. 86918, 87849).

It occurs mainly in the weedy and shallow parts of brooks, small streams, pools and swamps (Ref. 3788); these brooks are located in forested savannah (Ref. 3788). It is not a seasonal killifish and difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
