Enlarged suborbital bones occupying most of cheek; each caudal lobe with a dark stripe; longitudinal stripe across dorsal (Ref. 43281).
Found mainly in medium to large-sized rivers (Ref. 12975). Found in large rivers during the dry season and in floodplain streams and canals during the wet season. Does not persist in impoundments (Ref. 12693). Feeds on algae (Ref. 12975), phytoplankton (Ref. 12693), fish and crustaceans (Ref. 56749).
