Etymology: Zalanthias: Jordan and Richardson (1910) did not specify the meaning of Zalanthias. However, ‘zal’ might derive from the Greek word ζᾰ’λη, meaning storm or downpour. The connection between this term and the genus name remains unclear.

It is possible that P. melanesius is a junior synonym of P. azumanus (Ref. 123579).

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: D X,15-16; pectoral rays 15; lateral line complete with 32-34 tubed scales; no antrorse serrations on lower edge of preopercle; scales with basal cteni; melanophores on caudal peduncle form a bar that extends to ventral margin of peduncle (Ref. 123579).
