Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal soft rays: 20 - 25. Astyanax pardensis of the A. fasciatus complex differs from the rest of the species in the group by the number of precaudal vertebrae 6 (vs. 17); by the zig-zag shape of first portion of longitudinal band; differs from A. jequitinhonhae by the shape of the mandible which is rounded (vs. acuminate) (Ref. 126164).
