Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal soft rays: 18 - 19; Vertebrae: 44 - 45. Alburnus sava can be diagnosed from all its congeners in the Danube drainage by having the following characters: 23?27, usually 24?26, gill rakers; the ventral keel usually completely scaled (scaleless maximum 15% of the keel length); pectoral fin with 15?16 (mode = 15) branched rays; length of gill raker 65?70% of the length of the opposite outer gill filament; and a relatively long lower jaw (37?40% HL, 112?130% interorbital width) (Ref. 116758).
It inhabits streams and rivers with moderate to rapid current and a gravel and cobble bottom. During the spawning season in spring, it migrates upstream to smaller tributaries to shallow riffles where they spawn (Ref. 116758).
