Dorsal spines (total): 5 - 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 15; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 16 - 20. Melanotaenia garylangei is distinguished by the following combination of characters: dorsal fin rays IV-VI + I,12-15; anal fin rays I,16-20; in life, adult males have a blue nape and an olive green upper side, a midlateral blackish stripe covering two rows of scales of which the line above the upper scale row is regularly broken and the scales are of greenish, 1-2 red stripes above and below the mid-lateral stripe; second dorsal, pectoral, anal and middle portion of caudal fin red; and dorsal and anal fins elongated in males (Ref. 113073).
Found in small rainforest creeks. The collection sites have clear and tannin-stained water. The typical habitats were composed of muddy substrate, with only one site consisting of submerged aquatic vegetation (Barclaya sp.) . Undisturbed habitats were partially covered by forest canopy, whereas disturbed sites were exposed to sunlight. Occurs together with Melanotaenia goldiei, Melanotaenia rubrostriata, Pseudomugil sp., and Ambassis agrammus. Prefers shallow (10-20 cm depth) areas usually covered with floating grass. Attains sexual maturity at approximately 2.5 cm SL and age of 6 months based on aquarium observations (Ref. 113073).
