Dorsal spines (total): 37 - 40; Dorsal soft rays (total): 82 - 92; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 79 - 81; Vertebrae: 97 - 100. Differs from all congeners by having a unique color pattern consisting of numerous individual spots or irregular marks, sometimes forming short lines and a whitish belly devoid of any marks. Can be separated from members of the Mastacembelus armatus group by the possession of abdominal vertebrae 42-44 (Ref. 78150).
