Dorsal soft rays (total): 8; Anal soft rays: 11; Vertebrae: 31. Distinguished from its congeners, except Phallotorynus jucundus, by having a color pattern consisting of six to nine dark brown round spots along lower half of flanks and by having densely pigmented dorsal fin. Differs from P. jucundus by having 8 dorsal-fin rays (vs. 9or 10), 11 anal-fin rays in females (vs. 10), by the absence of a dark ring around the anus in females and by the presence of a dark brown band on lower jaw (Ref. 56059).
