Etymology: Cottus: Greek, kottos = a fish (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Professor Sunziro Nozawa was a Japanese zoologist, curator at the museum in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and also Director of the fisheries bureau there. He loaned the holotype of the prickleback species to the authors. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
More on author: Snyder.

Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range Ecology

Freshwater; demersal; amphidromous (Ref. 51243). Temperate

Distribution Countries | FAO areas | Ecosystems | Occurrences | Point map | Introductions | Faunafri

Asia: Japan. MtDNA studies revealed three distinct phylogenetic groups (Hokkaido Island, Northern Tohoku District and Yamagata Prefecture) of the species. This also provides the basic information for the conservation of the species populations in the Tohoku District which have been designated as endangered local populations (Ref. 43190). Reported from Sakhalin Island in Russia (Ref. 58299).

Size / Weight / Age

Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 17.3 cm TL male/unsexed; (Ref. 126027); max. published weight: 76.80 g (Ref. 126027)

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits middle and upper reaches of rivers. 43190).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00955 (0.00414 - 0.02201), b=3.13 (2.92 - 3.34), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this species & (Sub)family-body (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.4   ±0.5 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Medium, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
