Africa: Kwango, Kwilu and southern tributaries of the Kasai (middle Congo River system) in Angola (Ref. 248, 11970).

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 72 - 84; Anal soft rays: 62 - 70. Body and fins darkly marbled and with irregular white blotches. Head rectangular dorsally; snout small; eyes dorsally located. Frontal fontanelle intermediate between `sole-shaped' and `knife-shaped'; occipital fontanelle very small. Supraorbital and `dermosphenotic' bones joined in specimens above 57.6 mm SL. Gill rakers relatively long, slender and distantly set. Degree of development of the suprabranchial organ variable, generally greatly reduced. Openings of the secondary sensory canals hardly visible.
