Marine; bathypelagic. Deep-water; 50°N - 35°S
Eastern Atlantic: between Ireland and the Azores; Canary Islands to South Africa but not recorded from the Gulf of Guinea. Western Atlantic: off Bermuda. Also known from northwest Pacific. Leptostomias gracilis, Leptostomias macropogon, Leptostomias longibarba, Leptostomias bermudensis, Leptostomias analis and Leptostomias leptobolus are probably synonyms of a single species (the entire complex needs a thorough study, Ref. 4468).
