Dorsal spines (total): 13 - 15; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 11; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8 - 10. This species is distinguished from its congeners, except G. gymnogenysgymnogenys by its more elongate body (body depth 34.9-38.3% SL, mean = 36.7 vs. 38.6-44.2 % SL, mean = 40.6 in gymnogenys specimens larger than 6.5 cm SL), and by the continuous iridescent olivaceous coloration of males (vs. clearly demarcated iridescent blue spots on the center of each scale) (Ref. 118066).
