Etymology: Santelmoa: Named after the Spanish ship San Telmo lost in the 'Terra Australis Incognita' (in Cape Shirreff, Livingston Island, according to Pinochet de la Barra 1993) on 2-4 September 1819, in honour of the 644 Spanish shipwrecked.; fusca: The specific name, fusca, is after the Latin word fuscus (dark) and refers to the body colour of type specimens (Ref. 89950).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 109 - 113; Anal spines: 88 - 94. Can be diagnosed by the following characters: mouth terminal; oral valve overlapping the anterior edge of vomer; two posterior nasal pores of similar size; lateral line double with ventral and medio-lateral branches; two irregular rows of palatine teeth; vomerine teeth present; dorsal fin rays 109-113; anal fin rays 88-94; pectoral fin rays 15-17; vertebrae asymmetrical, 27-29 + 87-91 = 114-118; two pyloric caeca well developed; pseudobranch filaments 3-6, elongated. Scales reduced to tail, absent on head and body (Ref. 89950).
