Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal soft rays: 18 - 25; Vertebrae: 33. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of an adipose fin (vs. absence); differs further from P. ariel and P. pygmaeus by the pelvic-fin rays i,6 with i,5 rare (vs. i,5); postcleithra 2 present (vs absent); differs further from P. ariel by having a shorter caudal peduncle 14-18 % SL (vs. 18- 24 % SL) (Ref. 128819).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Specimens were collected between 14:00 and 17:00 in a small tributary of the Rio Jamari, close to a bush of submerged macrophytes in a slow flowing part of the Rio Preto, approximately 200 m above rapids. It was collected with Apistogramma resticulosa, Axelrodia lindeae, Axelrodia stigmatias, Hemigrammus bellottii, Hyphessobrycon aff. sweglesi, Leporinus sp., Nannostomus trifasciatus, Odontocharacidium aphanes and Satanoperca sp. Three of these species are considered miniature: the characids Axelrodia lindeae, A. stigmatias and the crenuchid Odontocharacidium aphanes. This species and the three miniatures are mostly transparent, and with the larger Hemigrammus bellottii which has a predominantly translucent body in life, an ‘almost invisible league’ for the Rio Negro was proposed by Carvalho et al., 2006 (Ref. 128847 in Ref. 128819).
