This species is distinguished from its congeners by lacking the blue luminous tissue on body and the presence of a short dorsal appendage on stem of the mental barbel proximally to the bulb and a long distal appendage extending from the distal tip of the bulb (see Beebe, 1933, Ref. 120405;fig. 6)
