Ventral surface of the head mostly scaled, except for scaleless areas anterior to the mouth and on the anterior half of the lower jaw. Pelvic fin with 8 rays, rarely 7 or 9. Lower jaw with 2–3 rows of small pointed uniform-sized teeth reducing to a single row posteriorly. Upper jaw with 4–5 rows of small, uniform-sized teeth. Body scales small, 30–40 in a diagonal row from anal fin origin to lateral line. Pyloric caeca 20–37 (Ref. 89100).
