This species is distinguished by the following characters: distinct colour pattern of 3-7 regular black bars on the flank, with a white background; males with suborbital flap and vertical skin flanges on the dorsal surface of pectoral in between the branched rays; cylindrical pectoral axillary lobe in males, with pointed posterior extremity, often separate from skin of flank by a deep groove, usually with a second similar lobe above the groove (Ref. 132426).
