Dorsal soft rays (total): 4 - 5; Anal soft rays: 4. This species is distinguished by the following characters: body is dark brown, covered by simple tubercles on the dorsal surface and relatively more sparsely scattered tubercles on the ventral surface, no small tubercles interspersed among them on either side of body; principal tubercle on rostrum is simple, with broad base bearing several small spines; principal tubercles on tail are simple, never bifurcate; dorsal lobe of esca with a pair of cirri on tip and two or three pairs of small lateral flaps; orbital diameter large, 11.6-14.0% (mean 12.7%) SL; interorbital space narrow 9.9-11.3% SL (mean 10.7%); lateral-line neuromasts 2-4 (mainly 3) in ventral series (Ref. 127411).
