This species is distinguished from G. rufa by having a blunt snout (vs. slightly pointed) and a more slender body, its body depth at dorsal-fin origin 18-21% of SL (vs. 21-24%); with 19 fixed diagnostic nucleotide substitutions in the mitochondrial COI barcode region (Ref. 128951).
