Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible.; fasciola: Named in reference to the bands nearly encircling the trunk (Ref. 5289).

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 8 - 9; Vertebrae: 26 - 27. This species is distinguished by the following characters: complete cephalic sensory-canal pore system; dorsal/anal-fin formula 9/8; branched pectoral-fin rays; absence of fifth pelvic-fin ray; non-fimbriate urogenital papilla; pectoral-fin base with a single dark vertical bar; the body is light with numerous dark bands on almost full depth of the body (Ref. 107299).
Inhabits shallow reef flats, secretive in corals (Ref. 48637). Common along wave-swept reef margins.
