Short description Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 13 - 16; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 14; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8 - 10. Diagnosis: lower pharyngeal bone about as long as broad, and with anterior lamella shorter than toothed area; median pharyngeal teeth not broadened; dorsal fin with 13-16 spines and 12-14 soft rays; soft dorsal and upper tip of caudal bordered with orange-red; "tilapia" spot clearly marked even in adults; dorsal and caudal fins not or feebly blotched (Ref. 53405).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Seems to prefer brackish regions and coastal lagoons; probably has a high tolerance for elevated salinity levels; herbivorous; pair-bonding, open substrate spawner, with both parents guarding the brood (Ref. 52307).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01514 (0.00700 - 0.03275), b=2.97 (2.80 - 3.14), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  2.0   ±0.00 se; based on food items.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (15 of 100).
