Adults with dark gray brown color in life; median and pelvic fins broadly blackish basally; tips of spinous membranes of dorsal fin yellow; distal part of soft portions of dorsal and anal fins bluish white; pectoral fins bluish white with a large black spot at the base; young bright yellow in life. Upper and lower spiniform procurrent caudal rays 3. Tuber lateral line scales 16-18. Body depth 1.9-2.25 in SL. Free margin of subopercle reaching to below rear margin of pupil. Tongue triangular with rounded tip (Ref. 39287).
Observed often on steep rocky substrata off promontories at depths of 15 m or more. Feed on zooplankton, generally in small groups with individuals, as high as 5 m above the bottom (Ref. 39287). Diurnal species (Ref. 54980). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
