Can be diagnosed by the having the following characters: bright red fins throughout life; 2 rows of pharyngeal teeth (usually 1,4-4,1 or 2,4-4,1); black vertical bar near base of caudal fin in breeding males; 49-63 lateral scales; 36-49 scales around body at dorsal fin origin; 23-30 rakers on 1st gill arch; and pectoral fin with 15-16 rays (Ref. 86798).
Inhabits rocky riffles, runs and sometimes pools of headwaters, creeks, and small rivers (Ref. 86798).
