Diagnosed from its congeners in Black Sea basin by having the following characters: tip of dorsal slightly pointed; posterior margin of dorsal slightly concave; dorsal origin in front of pelvic origin; last simple dorsal ray weak, serrated along lower 50-70% of its length; lower lip with a median swollen pad; body and dorsal with fine dark spots, smaller than pupil; usually 55-60 total scales on lateral line (Ref. 50943).
Inhabits fast to moderate flowing rivers and streams (Ref. 59043). Reaches up to at least 29 cm SL (Ref. 59043).
