This species is distinguished by the following characters: D XI, 31-34 (31); gill rakers in first gill arch 7 + 1 + 7-9; lateral line pored scales 70-73; adults without canines; emarginate caudal fin. Differs from Atractoscion aequidens and A. nobilis in having more dorsal-fin soft rays (31-34 vs. 26-29 in aequidens and 21-22 nobilis (Ref. 116590).
