Etymology: Antigonia: Daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta, who defied her uncle, king Creon, by performing funeral rites over her brother Polynices and was condemned to be immured in a cave (Ref. 45335); quiproqua: From the Latin 'qui pro qua', meaning 'one instead of another', referring to the change of name as almost all specimens, including holotype of this species, were included as paratypes in the type series of Antigonia saya..

Can be diagnosed from other species by having the following characters: upper and lower body profiles without pronounced angles, upper anterior profile almost straight; scales with shallow posterior ridge bearing sharp short ctenias; head length 2.6-2.7 in SL; mouth slit subvertical; lips narrow; descending part of praemaxillare straight; orbit diameter 2.4-2.7 times in HL; gill rakers 20-23; dorsal-fin rays VIII 30-32; anal-fin rays III 29-31 (Ref. 78445).
