Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 5; Anal soft rays: 9 - 10; Vertebrae: 31 - 32. Diagnosed by the following characters: space between anterior nostril and base of nasal barbel about equal to nostril diameter; anterior and posterior nostrils relatively small (diameter less than that of eye); anterior nostril located at end of short tube; jaws subequal (lip of upper jaw projecting past lower jaw); caudal fin emarginate (not strongly forked); eye dorsolateral, not protruding above head when viewed from side; large depression below eye; posterior edge of pectoral spine with three small serrae (much less than half width of spine); and top of head flat, lacking conspicuous concavity and bony ridges (Ref. 75761).
