Etymology: Labrochromis: Greek, labros = furious + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); mawepili: Name 'mawepili' from a Swahili words 'mawe' and 'pili', meaning 'stone' and 'second', in reference to the similarity in habitat association between this species and L. mawe and the superficial resemblance with the latter.

The species is mainly found in offshore areas at depths greater than 4 meters, characterized by gently to moderately sloping terrain with substrates of small boulders and steep rocks. Its diet consists primarily of snails and ostracods, with insect larvae consumed occasionally and in smaller proportions (Ref. 137953).
