Etymology: Chromis: Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); oligactis: Name 'oligactis' from a Greek word meaning 'few-rayed', in reference to the unusually low number of rays in P and in the soft parts of D and A, which is a characteristic feature of the new species.

Dorsal spines (total): 14; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 10; Vertebrae: 26. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: 14 spinous rays in D, 10 branched rays in D and A, 16-17 rays in P; 3 spiniform procurrent rays in the upper and lower lobe of C; 26 gill-rakers in the outer row on the first arch; 19 perforated scales in the anterior lateral line; maximum body depth, which fits 2.2 times in SL; a small dark spot at the base of P, without prominent light or black areas or a contrasting pattern on the body in preserved specimens (Ref. 137825).
