This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: plain brown body or no other colour formation; 2 rounded caudal-fin lobes; vertebrae 4 + 39 or more; shorter pectoral fins (length less than 11.5% of LS); emarginate caudal fin (the longest ray 1.4-1.5) with two rounded lobes, and a black dorsal fin with a broad white distal edge; backwards-positioned anus (the vent to anal distance 44.7%-53.0% of the pelvic to anal distance); wide black stripes on the caudal fin; and dorsal fin inserted posterior to the pelvic fin insertion and a caudal fin greyish brown with a hyaline distal margin (Ref. 137757).
