Etymology: Opsariichthys: Greek, opsarion, -ou = a little portion fish + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335); iridescens: Name iridescens from the Latin form of the word iridescent, in allusion to the unique body color, which is brighter than that of any known species in the genus.
