Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 10; Anal soft rays: 27 - 28. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: dorsal-fin rays (8-10*) and subdorsal scales (5-6*); dorsal-fin base (7.5-19.1% SL, mean 11.7%); male with dark blackish body; absence of green iridescent mid-lateral body patch; dorsal-, pelvic- and caudal fins red without significant marks; blackish anal fin with reddish patches on posterior part (Ref. 137539).
