Etymology: Gymnothorax: Greek, gymnos = naked + Greek, thorax, -akos = breast (Ref. 45335); ryukyuensis: 'ryukyuensis', i.e., from its locality, the Ryukyu Islands, Amami Island south to Yaeyama Islands where the type series was collected (Ref. 87015).
