Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal soft rays: 18 - 20. Rhinopetitia potamorhachia differs from its only congener, R. myersi Géry 1964, by the presence of distinct dark midlateral body stripe (vs. absence) overlaying an inconspicuous, round humeral blotch (vs. absence of humeral blotch); teeth in both premaxillary tooth rows with
seven to nine cusps and seven or eight cusps on the maxillary teeth (vs. outer series of premaxillary teeth with three cusps and inner series of premaxillary teeth with three to five cusps; maxillary teeth with three to five cusps) (Ref. 111429).
Found along sandy beaches of the Rio Teles Pires in an area significantly affected by the construction of the Teles Pires hydroelectric dam (Ref. 111429).
