Rhinogobius sangenloensis is distinguished from all other congeners by the unique combination of following characters: modally I/8 second dorsal-fin rays; I/7-8 anal-fin rays; modally 17 pectoral-fin rays; 25-27 longitudinal scales; 9-11 predorsal scales; 10 + 16 = 26 vertebrae; 3-4 longitudinal, discontinuous orange to brown or brownish black bars and stripes on the body; 2 basal grayish black spots on cheek; 2 oblong black bars on pectoral-fin base in male; an orange mark on lower 1/3 region of caudal fin in male (Ref. 94987).
Occurs preferably in a hill-stream habitat with moderate to slow current over small to medium-sized pebbles and water depth ranging from 15-70 cm (Ref. 94987).
