This species is distinguished by the following characters: presence of a suborbital flap in adult males and a suborbital groove in adult females; slender caudal peduncle, less than 2/3 of body depth (vs. caudal peduncle depth about same as body depth); caudal fin deeply forked (length of median ray 53-58 % of length of upper lobe) (Ref. 95537); caudal-peduncle length 9.7-11.0% SL, depth 0.8-1.0 times in its length; body with 6-9 regular dark brown bars; lateral line complete, pores 73-80; and with a slight notch in lower jaw (Ref. 132199)..
