Anal soft rays: 29 - 33. Dactyloscopus heraldi differs from Dactyloscopus byersi in a number of features: no scalation above the curved portion of the lateral line (vs. one row); A 29-33, modally 32 (vs. 31-35, modally 34); upper lip fimbriae 11-14, modally 12 (vs. 13-18, modally 15); preopercular sensory pores increases in number with size, but more present in D. byersi of comparable sizes; chevron markings weak or absent (vs. prominent on the side posteriad) and presence of dark bars on the dorsum (vs. absent) (Ref. 82814).
