Etymology: Bufoceratias: Latin, bufo or bufonis = toad + Greek, keras or keratos = horn, horned (referring to the hornlike lure projecting from the head) (Ref. 86949); shaoi: Named in honor of Dr. Shao Kwang-Tsao, Research Fellow of the Institute of Zoology, Academic Sinica, Taiwan, Republic of China, in recognition of his many contributions to fishery science and ichthyology of Taiwan (Ref. 51070).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 5 - 6; Anal soft rays: 4. Metamorphosed females differs from Bufoceratias wedli and Bufoceratias thele in having a considerably shorter illicium (25-40% standard length versus 83-225% standard length) and a much larger and more complex esca (Ref. 51070).
Males and larvae unknown (Ref. 51070). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
