Etymology: Odontesthes: Greek, odous = teeth + Greek, esthes = suit, something used to wrap (Ref. 45335); piquava: Specific name joins part of the names of the lagoas Pinguela, Quadros and Itapeva, along the area of distribution of this species..
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Ecology
Freshwater; pelagic. Subtropical
South America: interconnected lakes of the rio Tramandai drainage, southern Brazil.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 26.3 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 116661)
Dorsal spines (total): 4 - 6; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7 - 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 16 - 20; Vertebrae: 47 - 49. Scales in lateral series above lateral band 47-53; and predorsal scales 24-26 (Ref. 47314). Differs from O. bicudo and O. ledae by the following characters: thin fragile premaxilla, not projected anteriorly in its medialmost portion; ventral head profile usually split into two straight sections, forming an angle at the retroarticular joint; snout short, as long as wide in dorsal view; mouth slightly upturned in lateral view and positioned above a horizontal line crossing near the center of eye and above a horizontal line crossing near the middle of head depth (Ref. 47314).
Occurs exclusively in freshwater (Ref. 47314).
