Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Body oblong, dusky or yellowish brown with 3 fainted dark stripes. Opercle with blue green patch, fins with iridescent blue, anal fin with dark margins. Pelvic fin short, anal fin base long, caudal fin rounded (Ref. 58784).
Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Inhabits limestone streams and marshes (Ref. 58784). The type locality was described as a pool of 10-15 m diameter, up to 10 m deep and the species was collected along the banks. Water data reported was 27 °C, pH 7.0, electric conductivity 530 µS/cm. Examined specimens were collected in a comparatively fast flowing, clear-water creek and were found between plants (Ref. 78499). Carnivorous, feeding on zooplankton and insects (Ref. 58784).
