South America: French Guiana (Ref. 36579) and Suriname (Ref. 59052). Status of this species is uncertain; possibly a regional form of Rivulus urophthalmus.

Occurs in flooded savannas and coastal swamps which are sunlit. Frequently found in shallow waters and is sympatric with other Rivulus of French Guiana except R. ocellatus (Ref. 27188). Not a seasonal killifish. Juveniles are released from eggs measuring 1.2 mm (Ref. 35237). Sexual differentiation is possible at 4 months; sexual maturity is reached at 5 months of age (Ref. 27188). Calm and passive; is easy to maintain in the aquarium (Ref. 27139).
