Body abruptly attenuated caudally; 23 precaudal vertebrae; cranium higher than in other members of the family; anal rays covered by a thick tissue, giving an undulated shape to the anal fin; basibranchials not ossified (cartilaginous matrices); tail about 1/5 of anal fin base; lateral line incomplete; no scalation on dorsoanteriorly and middorsally.
