Etymology: Bodianus: Bodianus after Bodiano or Pudiano, from the Portuguese pudor, meaning modesty (Jordan & Evermann, 1896); sanguineus: Name from Latin adjective meaning 'bloody' or 'blood-red', refers to the bright red coloration of this species (Ref. 759763).

Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Reported to have been encountered it most often in pairs, one individual usually being much larger than the other; appears to be among the deepest ranging of the subgenus Trochocopus, collected at depths of 67 to 238 m, but apparently preferring depths of 100-120 m (Ref. 75973). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
