Etymology: Artediellus: Petrus (Peter) Artedi, (10 Mar.) 1705-35 (28 Sep.), a son of a clergyman from Anundsjö named Olaus Arctaedius, in the northern part of Sweden.In 1729 he changed his name from Arctaedius to Arctædi, a name still later simplified to Artedi (Ref. 45335).

Dorsal spines (total): 7 - 8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 13; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 10 - 12. Caudal fin rounded. Light with dark, pale brown or reddish mottling; dorsal fin with small, roundish white blotches on a dark background, especially distinct in males; anal and pectoral fins with dark cross-bars; caudal fin with blotch on base (Ref. 4698).
Found on sand, mud or hard bottoms (Ref. 4698). Benthic; feeds on invertebrates (Ref. 58426).
