Etymology: Schistura: Greek, schizein = to divide + Greek, oura = tail; an allusion to forked caudal fins (Ref. 45335); laterimaculata: From lateralis (Latin): on the side of the body and maculatus (Latin): blotted (Ref. 39226).

This species is questionably a synonym of Schistura nicholsi (Smith, 1933) in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. May 2011: Ref. 86870) following Kottelat (2001: Ref. 43281). Please send references, or more studies are needed.

Max length : 5.5 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 12693)
Dorsal soft rays (total): 12; Anal soft rays: 8. Consists of about 10 bars superposed over 5-7 elongate blotches on sides; processus dentiformis present; males have no suborbital flap; incomplete lateral line reaching pelvic fin origin, with 20-25 pores; 8 1/2 branched dorsal rays; 9+8 branched caudal rays; emarginate caudal fin; complete black basal caudal bar; axillary pelvic lobe minute or absent; anus situated 1.5 eye diameters in front of anal fin (Ref. 39226). With a dark spot at dorsal-fin origin and a lighter spot posteriorly at dorsal-fin base; belly without scales nearly to pelvic fins, back scaled (Ref. 12693).
