Africa: known from Lakes Kyoga and Kwania, the Victoria Nile, dams in the Teso district and the Aswa River in Uganda (Ref. 4903).

Found in most areas of the lakes and rivers from which it has been collected (Ref. 49805). Generalist feeder (Ref. 12526, 49805). Insectivorous as juvenile, adults eat Caridina, small fishes, and Povilla and Odonata larvae (Ref. 12526). Prawns, water weed and oligochaetes have also been found in the stomach (Ref. 49805). Mabybe spawns in rocky riverine habitats (Ref. 12526).
