Ecology
Freshwater; demersal. Temperate; 70°N - 30°N
North America: Mackenzie, Saskatchewan, and Lake Winnipeg drainages in Canada; Missouri-Mississippi River basin from southern Alberta in Canada and Montana to Louisiana, USA; Arkansas River drainage in USA; and upper Rio Grande (including Pecos) drainage in New Mexico, USA. Two subspecies usually recognized: Platygobio gracilis gracilis in northern and eastern parts of range, and Platygobio gracilis gulonella in southern and western parts of range.

Inhabits sandy runs of small to large turbid rivers (Ref. 86798). Feeds mainly on terrestrial and aquatic insects, occasionally on small fishes. Spawning probably occurs from June to August (Ref. 1998).
